With a huge selection of delicious meals, coffee & snacks, Anchor Buoy has quickly become one of the most loved cafe’s in Sanctuary Cove. We talk to business owner, Kelly, on her Anchor Buoy journey, her favourite dishes and what community means to her.
What has been your journey to opening Anchor Buoy?
My husband and I purchased this established business around two and a half years ago, we own another café and were looking to add another one to the mix somewhere around the northern Gold Coast.
Over the years, we’ve been frequent customers to a couple of the cafes here in The Village and love the ambience of Sanctuary Cove. When the opportunity came up to buy the café, we snapped it up.
How has the business changed over the years?
There have been several changes over the last few years, I guess the first was the interiors which we have slowly updated over time. These are softer touches rather than drastic ones and include painting the roof, newly introduced stone work and adding a lush garden wall, which we and the customers love. It adds a real ambience and that casual, day time café vibe we are striving for.
In terms of changes to the menu, this is continually evolving which has been a successful move for us, particularly with our mid-week lunch and Sunday breakfast trade. Having good quality, fresh ingredients, differing price points on the menu and value for money has paid off for us.
How would you best describe the dining experience at Anchor Buoy?
It’s casual, cruisy and a relaxed. There are plenty of options too, customers can choose something light like a toasted sandwich, right thought to a full meal such as beer battered fish and chips.
We are putting a strong focus on functions at Anchor Buoy this year, customers can hire the whole venue in the evening whether it be for a birthday or engagement party and we’ve also recently held a few weddings here too. As we are licensed, we have a lot of good options in terms of drink and food packages for any sort of function.
Where do you get your menu inspiration from?
We get our inspiration from eating out at various eateries across the Gold Coast, while Instagram is also a huge source of inspiration too. We never directly copy anything we see, but rather try and adapt our own version for Anchor Buoy.
What are you customers favorite dishes at Anchor Buoy?
The Seafood board is a signature dish at Anchor Buoy and is favourite for sure.
We have a lot of older clientele in the café who love the old classics like savory mince on toast for example, so it’s important we keep these type of dishes so we appeal to all of our audiences and customers.
Has food always been a passion of yours?
I’ve always worked in hospitality, starting out at McDonalds and working my way through various food companies, but food isn’t a passion of mine in the sense I don’t like to cook! After working in the café every day, the last thing we want to is cook so we enjoy Uber Eats or dining out most evenings. We don’t entertain at home either, after a day at Anchor Buoy, we would much prefer to go home and relax!
What is your favorite dish on your menu?
This is hard one, but I’d have to say the Dumplings or the Thai Beef Salad.
Tell us more about what community means to you….
We love the ambience here at Sanctuary Cove and the network of tenants is very supportive, we are always serving someone from The Village and it’s great to have their support. We also love our regular locals who visit on a regular basis. Sanctuary Cove really has that community feel which is what attracted us here in the first place.
