Meet Ronell from Bistro 19
Dine local at Bistro 19. The Marine Village much loved food and beverage outlet, Café 19, has recently relaunched to Bistro 19 with an invigorated menu and fit out to match. Faithful customers will vouch that this establishment has always had a welcoming atmosphere with some of the best available coffee in The Village. We talk to business owner, and Sanctuary Cove resident, Ronell, on how she came to be in the café scene, her favourite family dishes and what community means to her.
What has been your journey to opening Bistro 19?
My husband and I fell in love with Café Nineteen as Sanctuary Cove locals who visited the establishment regularly and vouched should the business ever be up for sale, we would purchase in a heartbeat. In 2015, our wishes came true when I received a call from the previous owners of Café Nineteen, the business was for sale and would I like to buy? The rest is history, as they say, and we took ownership in August 2015.
I havent always been in the food game and I am actually a qualified teacher and taught in South Africa. I have a passion for cooking and entertaining which meant that the career crossover into café ownership has been a very enjoyable one for me. I said to myself, if I can manage and direct students, then surely I can apply the same practice in a café environment?
How has the business changed since first taking over in 2015?
We underwent a refurbishment in September 2019 and reopened under the new Bistro 19 name. This refurbishment included a new and improved outdoor deck area, furniture and wall sketches throughout the interior. Whilst our core business is still the same, we changed up the menu to incorporate a renaissance of favourites like waffles and haloumi sticks while introducing a new dinner menu on Friday and Saturday nights.
How would you best describe the dining experience at Bistro 19?
Bistro 19 is stylish, casual and relaxed and somewhere you always know you know you can get good, quality food. My staff have a very friendly disposition and go that extra mile for the customers, all with warm friendly smiles. It was important to me to create a space and atmosphere which was homely and welcoming, and this is testament to the return customers we see each and every week.
What are you signature dishes?
Breakfast is big at Bistro 19 and as simple as it sounds, eggs are the most popular item on the menu! Customers can choose to have their eggs done any which way – friend, poached, scrambled – and can add whatever additional sides they wish to create the perfect breakfast plate.
Since launching Bistro 19 and our new menu, our Chefs have created some beautiful salads on the lunch menu have been a hot favourite, with the Pumpkin and Feta salad being the ultimate favourite. If you haven’t tried it, you must!
Is cooking a passion of yours?
Although I’m not a qualified chef, I absolutely love to cook and when I’m not busy running the Bistro, you’ll find me at home in the kitchen cooking up a storm.
What are your favourite dishes to make at home?
I love a good, delicious pasta dish which is perfect for sharing and I’m also a big fan of baking. I’m the one who is always in charge of the birthday cakes in the family, even my own! Being from South African, l also loves to recall on my heritage and cook traditional South African dishes which mostly contain meat and potatoes, something my family and I always look forward too.
Tell us more about what community means to you…..
Being both a resident and business owner at Sanctuary Cove, I really do understand how important it is to support other businesses within The Marine Village. The community is small, very tight knit and genuinely very helpful of their peers. If I’m ever in need of a gift, I will always visit one of my fellow retailers to pick up that perfect present. We often have friends and family visiting from South Africa, and all of them fall in love with the magical feel of Sanctuary Cove and all that is on offer here. It’s so unique and special here and I love that I both live and work in this beautiful part of the Gold Coast.
